IPMI is a specification that provides a common interface for accessing all the manageable features in a system. IPMI includes a rich set of predefined commands and interfaces organized by type of operation, such as reading temperature, voltage, fan speed, and chassis intrusion. Methods also are provided for accessing the system event log (SEL), hardware watchdog, and power control. It can help minimize overall downtime and costs during the server life cycle by eliminating the need to physically visit the server to diagnose and rectify problems and to perform more intelligent diagnostics before dispatching personnel.

DSI5100 (IPMI Proxy Appliance)

The DSI5100 IPMI proxy appliance integrates with DSView 3 software for a single interface to securely monitor and control power and system health on IPMI enabled servers. Emergency control and access through Serial-over-Lan and power control are also centralised in the software, providing a single point for access and control of all systems in your IT network.

Information about IPMI

IPMI is a technology that adds a management processor to a server or other device to instrument and provides a management channel that does not require the main processor or operating system to be operational. IPMI is a "standard" communication method developed by Intel and a group of other companies. OSA Technologies had developed the IPMI firmware stack as well as the software management interface to access the management processor. Prior to the Avocent acquisition, OSA Technologies had licensed the IPMI firmware to a number of server manufacturers and has continued to amass design wins for the firmware.

Here are a few of the new server models that are shipping with IPMI capabilities. Each of these includes the management processor known as a MBC or a baseboard management controller, which is used to monitor internal sensor information such as temperature, fan speed and battery voltage.
